In occasione della presentazione del nuovo libro di Judith Halberstam "Maschilità senza uomini" a cura di Federica Frabetti Martedì 7 dicembre presso la Casa Internazionale delle Donne, Kyrahm e Julius Kaiser illustreranno il loro lavoro e ricerca.
Judith Halberstam è docente dell’Università della Southern California di Los Angeles ed è una figura di riferimento dei queer studies, che pongono al centro della loro ricerca il genere sessuale e l'identità. Ha pubblicato numerosi libri tra cui The Drag King Book, insieme a Del LaGrace Volcano. Maschilità Senza Uomini è il suo primo libro tradotto in italiano ed è una raccolta di saggi tratti dai suoi testi più celebri a cura di Federica Frabetti.
Per drag king intendiamo una figura generalmente di sesso femminile che si traveste da uomo per spettacolo. All'estero questa pratica speculare alle più famose drag queen, è diffusa da diversi anni. In Italia il fenomeno è relativamente recente e il drag king Julius Kaiser è un esponente di riferimento di questa espressione che non si riduce alla pratica del travestitismo, ma è un vero e proprio movimento perchè ha lo scopo di decostruire il genere come ci viene tradizionalmente imposto, esplorando la fluidità dei sessi e delle identità. Julius Kaiser nasce donna ma parla di sè al maschile, sottolinenado l'errore frequente dei media che non rispettano il genere di arrivo soprattutto nei confronti delle e dei transessuali, dove la trasformazione sessuale ha origini personali profonde.
Julius Kaiser coadiuvò l'arrivo di Judith/Jack Halberstam nel 2006, sempre presso la Casa Internazionale delle Donne a Roma per la presentazione dei libri "In a Queer Time and Space" e "Female Masculinity". Fu in quell'occasione che Julius Kaiser debuttò come Drag King venendo battezzato con il suo primo nome d'arte "Brutus" dallo stesso Jack. L'artista Kyrahm, body artist e performer presso teatri, gallerie e musei, affascinata da sempre dalla maschilità femminile, ha intuito la necessità di proporre la tematica drag king nella veste della performance art in Italia e all'estero. Lo spettacolo drag king, fino ad allora, si presentava come ironico e grottesco, fruibile prettamente nella comunità gay e lesbica. Insieme comprendono che è necessario uscire dalla zona di confort della comunità, che bisogna contaminare diversi contesti per far sentire la propria voce. La loro collaborazione dà vita alla "Installazione Umana I: Obsolescenza del genere" che sconvolge e commuove. Il forte impatto dei corpi nudi è potenziato dalla distanza sacra con il pubblico, che con rispettoso silenzio assiste al rito della trasformazione da donna a uomo di Julius Kaiser. L'opera vola negli Stati Uniti indicata tra le 30 performance migliori del mondo, vince il concorso del Premio Arte Laguna 2009. Kyrahm inserisce l'opera tra le altre altre sue "Human Installations" e nasce un "Trittico" potente che indaga le trasformazioni del corpo nelle fasi dell'esistenza, azzarda l'accostamento con la body art estrema e l'iconografia cristiana creando pericolosi ma altrettanto affascinanti parallelismi tra la transessualità e Dio. Il Trittico ha recentemente vinto il voto on line del Celeste Prize international e sarà presente all'esposizione di New York a dicembre.
"Quando riceviamo dei riconoscimenti", ci dicono Julius Kaiser e Kyrahm, "è l'intera comunità gay lesbo bisex trans e queer a vincere ed è importante che il nostro lavoro venga presentato in presenza di Judith/Jack Halberstam, poichè nonostante la situazione politica attuale, stiamo apportando una trasformazione culturale sia per la pratica del kinging che per l'arte contemporanea".
Tutto questo sarà presentato presso la Casa Internazionale delle Donne mercoledì 7 dicembre a partire dalle ore 18.30.

Tuesday, December 7th 2010 in Rome (Casa Internazionale delle Donne) Jack/Judith Halberstam will present her new book “Masculinity without men” edited by Federica Frabetti. For this occasion Kyrahm and Julius Kaiser will illustrate their artistic work and research.
Judith Halberstam is Professor of English and Director of The Center for Feminist Research at University of Southern California. In the broader cultural sphere, she has made contributions as a gender and queer theorist and author; he is also a participant in the drag king community under the name Jack Halberstam. She published several books including The Drag King Book, along with Del LaGrace Volcano. “Masculinity without Men” is a collection of her most famous essays translated for the first time into Italian and edited by Federica Frabetti.
Drag Kings are mostly female performance artists who dress in masculine drag and personify male gender stereotypes as part of their performance. Abroad this practice started many years ago. In Italiy this happened quite recently. It is not only a cross-dressing practice. The Drag King movement wants to deconstruct gender roles as imposed by tradition and culture, exploring the fluidity of genders and identities. Julius Kaiser is a representative reference of this expression in Italy.
Jack and Julius met for the first time in 2006. Julius facilitated Jack’s presentation of the books “Female Masculinity” and “In a Queer space and time” in Rome. In that occasion he made his debut as Drag King gaining his first stage name “Brutus” by Jack himself.
Kyrahm is a conceptual artist, body artist and live performance artist at theatres, art galleries and museums. While she’s always being fascinated by female masculinity, she felt the need to bring the drag king issue in the guise of performance art in Italy and abroad. The Drag King show is commonly known as grotesque and ironic, accessible mainly within the Queer/LGBT community. Kyrahm and Julius felt the urgency to leave the comfort zone of the queer community to go and contaminate other contexts to widely spread their message. Their collaboration gave birth to "Human Installation I: Gender Obsolescence” that gained several international art prizes. "Gender Obsolescence" shakes and moves, the impact of the naked bodies is enhanced by the sacred distance with the audience that attends in respectful silence the ritual of woman to man transformation done by Julius Kaiser. The work is presented in the US among the 30 best gender-exploration performances in the world; in 2009 won the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice.
Kyrahm included Gender Obsolescence in her work “Tryptich” which explores the concept of Mutation and metamorphosis. The powerful changes of the body in the early stages of life, extreme body art and Christian iconography, and the fluidity of sex create “dangerous” but equally fascinating parallelism between transsexuality and God. Triptych won the On line vote at the Celeste Prize International 2010 and will be shown in New York in December.
"When we receive such acknowledgments it’s the entire community to win. It is important that our work is shown to Judith / Jack Halberstam, since we are making a cultural transformation happen in both the contemporary art context as well as in the drag king culture”.
